Legendary Canadian star Christopher Plummer and friends raise over $30 000 at evening in aid of Shakespeare’s Globe (Canada) and
On Wednesday September 19th 2007 at Bishop Strachan School in Toronto Christopher Plummer along with a host of famous Canadians entertained an audience in a truly historical night in Canadian Theatre.
After a busy weekend attending two of his movie premieres at The Toronto International Film Festival (Emotional Arithmetic and Closing The Ring) Mr. Plummer presented two fellowships to Caleb Marshall and Matt Stienberg, participants this summer in the International Company at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, located in London, England. Since 2001, the award has helped a number of professionals join a skilled group of international actors in a re construction of the original Globe Theatre where most of Shakepseare’s work was performed over 400 years ago. The event also celebrated the screening of Hamlet (solo), the critically acclaimed documentary by Jeff Stephenson which was recently broadcast on BRAVO! Canada. The film chronicles the seven year journey of past Fellowship recipient and rising Canadian star Raoul Bhaneja and included interviews with a number of great Canadian actors who had played Hamlet during their careers. Mr. Plummer hosted a special Q and A prior to the screening where he read an excerpt of his soon to be released autobiography and then interviewed Bhaneja along with several Hamlets who appeared in the documentary including John Neville, Brent Carver, Ben Carlson and RH Thomson. A surprise appearance from Don Harron in the guise of his most famous creation Charlie Farqueson had the audience in stitches and was capped off by a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday for the 83 year old actor led by non other than his close friend and Globe supporter Norman Jewison. In addition there was a special announcement from dynamic Soulpepper Artistic Director (and former Hamlet himself) Albert Schultz who announced a new partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe in an ambitious plan to develop the summer internship into a larger international project with his company as a leading force. The evening was hosted by former Fellowship recipient Toronto actress Catherine McNally and was organized by long time Shakespeare Globe supporters Christina and Lyle Blair along with Nona Macdonald Heaslip, Julia Bungaro and several dedicated board members and volunteers. The final tally on the evening including tickets sales and donations equaled $30 000 making it one of the most successful Shakespeare Globe Canada Fundraisers to date and will ensure that more artists will be able to share in this rare opportunity in the future.
